1809. Nace bajo el nombre de Edgar Poe en Boston, producto del matrimonio entre la actriz Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins Poe y el actor David Poe Jr. Tiene un hermano mayor, William Henry Arnold Hopkins.
1810. Su padre abandona la familia.
1811. Fallece su madre.
1812. Es adoptado por la familia escocesa Allan, la cual le daria el nombre Edgar Allan Poe.
1815. La familia Allan viaja a Gran Bretaña. Edgar asiste a la escuela por un período corto en Irvine, Escocia; lugar de nacimiento de su padre adoptivo.
1816. Se reúne con su familia en Londres. Estudia en Chelsea hasta el verano del siguiente año.
1817. Ingresa al colegio del Reverendo John Bransby, en Stoke Newington.
1820. Él y su familia retornan a Richmond, Virginia.
1824. Poe sirve como lugarteniente en la guardia de honor de Richmond, durante la celebración de la visita del Marqués de Lafayette.
1825. Se inscribe en la Universidad de Virginia para estudiar idiomas.
1826. Abandona sus estudios.
1827. [Abril] Se muda a Boston. Trabaja como escritor en periódicos, bajo el seudónimo Henri Le Rennet. [Mayo] Se inscribe en la Armada de los Estados Unidos bajo el nombre de Edgar A. Perry; alegando tener 22 años, en realidad tenía 18. [Julio] Realiza su primer libro, Tamerlane and Other Poems, un texto de 40 páginas, firmado por «un bostoniano». El texto no recibió atención alguna.
1829. [Febrero] Muere su madre adoptiva, Frances Valentine Allan. [Abril] Después de declarar su situación real al comandante Howard, es retirado de servicio para continuarlo mas adelante en West Point. [?] Viaja a Baltimore para vivir con su tía Maria Clemm, su prima Virginia Eliza Clemm, su hermano Henry, y su abuela Elizabeth Cairnes Poe antes de enrolarse en West Point. Éste mismo año publica su segundo libro, Al Aaraaf, Tamerlane and Minor Poems.
1830. [Julio] Ingresa al servicio en West Point, como cadete. [Octubre] Su padre adoptivo se casa por segunda vez. Desconoce a Edgar como su hijo. [?] Decide abandonar West Point, con el propósito de recibir «corte marcial».
1831. [Febrero] Viaja a New York y realiza su tercer libro, titulado Poems. El libro es financiado con ayuda de sus amigos cadetes de West Point. [Marzo] Regresa con su tía, prima y hermano a Baltimore. [Agosto] Su hermano Henry muere.
1833. Ya abocado a su carrera literaria, recibe un premio por parte de The Baltimore Saturday Visiter, por su relato «MS. Found in a Bottle».
1835. Se convierte en editor asistente del periódico Southern Literary Messenger, en Richmond. Es despedido semanas después por ser sorprendido ebrio. [Septiembre] Regresa a Baltimore y se casa secretamente con su prima Virginia Clemm. Él tenia 26 años, ella 13.
1836. Ya en Richmond, tiene una segunda ceremonia de matrimonio, esta vez públicamente.
1838. The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket es publicado, recibiendo grandes críticas.
1839. Se convierte en editor asistente de Burton’s Gentleman’s Magazine. Publica numerosos artículos, ensayos, historias, reseñas, etc.
1842. Virginia Clemm presenta síntomas de tuberculosis. Poe incremente su consumo de alcohol.
1845. Su poema El Cuervo aparece en The Evening Mirror, se convierte en una sensación.
1847. Muere Virginia Clemm.
1849. [Octubre 3] Es encontrado delirando en las calles de Baltimore. Ingresa al hospital Washington College Hospital. [Octubre 7] Muere en Baltimore el domingo 7 de octubre a las 5 am.
