Lynd Ward (1905-1985) fue un ilustrador nacido en Chicago que se caracterizó no solo por sus ilustraciones, si no también por sus «novelas sin palabras», contadas únicamente a través de las imágenes, las cuales eran realizadas a partir de grabados sobre madera.
Además de Frankenstein, ilustró obras como Fausto y Beowulf.
